Jakob Ingebrigtsen, greatest ever?!

Jakob Ingebrigtsen has been one of the most popular names in the sport, as he continued to break World age records and compete against the best in the World at such a young age. We’ve seen many wonder kids in the past. But the consistency of Jakob and how his 2021 season has gone so far, makes you think Jakob Ingebrigtsen is the real deal.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen greatest ever?!

Jakob Ingebrigtsen now has the highest combined World ranking of any runner in history over the 1500m and the 5000m. 8th in the 1500m and 12th in the 5000m. This places him 4 rankings ahead of Hicham El Guerrouj and Daniel Komen who both have a combined ranking of 24.

So based off actual numbers the 20 year old Norwegian is technically the best 1500m/5000m ever. But there is much more to consider. How good his race tactics are, championship medals, etc… Considering he confidently beat one of the best 5000m fields in history, including the World record holder Joshua Cheptegei and is undefeated this year in the 1500m/3000m & 5000m. His race tactics seem to be fairly decent, to say the least. Championship medals; although he has no Global senior medals yet, he has 11 European Gold medals on track and cross country. And it’s looking extremely likely he will have some Olympic medals to add to his collection after Tokyo. Still at the age of 20.

Obviously claiming he is the best ever is ridiculous. But with him already (at 20 years old) being the fastest in history combining the rankings, he has every chance to challenge for gold in the next 3 Olympics, over the 1500m and 5000m. And by his 3rd Olympics, he will still only be 28 years old?! With his 1500m time projection being faster than the World record, it will be interesting to see if Jakob continues to improve to become the undeniable greatest ever. He already has the times, now he just needs the medals to follow.
