Cheptegei 10000M World Record Attempt

Joshua Cheptegei 10000m World record?

Joshua Cheptegei 10000m world record? He will be going for that as he runs in a special exhibition race tonight, NN Valencia World Record Day. In an audacious attempt to surpass the incredible world record of 26:17.53 set by Kenenisa Bekele on
26th August 2005.

Cheptegi, the Ugandan athlete, who in the Monaco Diamond League in August smashed Bekele’s 5,000 metre world record in a stunning time of 12:35.36 will tonight attempt to defeat the longest standing world record in men’s track, the 10,000 metres.

The record, at 15 years’ old, was achieved when, “We Belong Together” by Mariah Carey sat number 1. Even before Facebook was even a thing in the UK. For want of a better phrase, it was an entirely differently era and the reason it has endured for so many years is simply because it was such a magnificent achievement by Bekele, undoubtedly one the of the all-time greats.

How good is Joshua Cheptegei?

For Cheptegei, only a performance of the highest quality will suffice. You would have to be confident to bet against him, however, describing himself this week as in “outstanding form”. His 5000 metre world record was a truly special moment and if that is anything to go by, Bekele’s world record is in serious danger.

This is not the first time Cheptegei has raced in Valencia, either. “I have many happy memories in Valencia, having set the 10km road record there last year…so hopefully we can create something truly special”, he told the media.

Cheptegei is supported by a number of pacemakers throughout the race. Including: Roy Hoornweg, Ryan Gregson, Nicolas Kimeli, Shadrack Kipchirchir and Trackstaa favourite, the Australians, Stewie McSweyn & Matt Ramsden.

The NN World Record Day includes a women’s 5000 metre attempt. Tirunesh Dibaba’s World record of 14:11.15 is being challenged by Letesenbet Gidey.
