The Brussels diamond league 2020

The 2020 Brussels diamond league seems like a strange setup, with 12 events stretching across a 3 hour and 12 minute period. These events include; Men’s 100m Wheelchair. Women’s 100m hurdles. Women’s 1 hour. Men’s pole vault. Women’s high jump. Women’s 100m. Men’s 1500m. Women’s 400m. Men’s 200m. Women’s 1000m. Men’s 1 hour.

1 hour race – Brussels diamond league

Probably the main events of the Brussels diamond league are the 1 hour races. This is because many people are expecting to see 2 World records in the Men’s and Women’s race. The Women’s record seems almost certain to be broken, with Brigid Kosgei & Sifan Hassan in the field. Brigid Kosgei ran faster for an hour, on the way to running the marathon World record. So, it only makes sense, she will blow the previous 1 hour World record out of the water.

On the Men’s side of things, all eyes seem to be on Mo Farah, in his first appearance on the track since 2017, which is a long time!. His training partner Bashir Abdi will also be going for the World Record and it looks like these will be the only two in the race to do so. The current World record of 21285m set by Haile Gebrselassie, seems a tough one to beat. It will be interesting to see how the race pans out and how the runners will manage running in spikes for 1 hour. Since the Vaporfly’s are now banned on the track.

Other Potential World records

Armand Duplantis cleared 6.07m last night. He only stopped due to lack of lighting within the streets of Lausanne. As the outdoor World record gets closer and closer, can he break it in Brussels? Our prediction is that he will, clear 6m with a comfortable win and then go for the World record. Ambitiously we think he will Jump 6.15m to become the outdoor and indoor World record holders.

Faith Kipyegon is set to race the 1000m. In Monaco she ran 2:29.15 which placed her 2nd on the all time list. If given the right race, with good pacing, It wouldn’t be too surprising to see the 3:54.22 1500m runner break the World record.

Exciting races

Every time Jakob Ingberigtsen races it brings excitement. What’s different this time is that there’s no one within almost 2 seconds of his personal best. The fastest seasons best behind Jakob is Jesus Gomez’s 3:33.07. Charlie Grice has the next best Personal best with 3:30.62. The lack of competition for Jakob, creates the question, will he race to win? or to achieve a fast time? It’ll be hard for him to chase a fast time with no competition in the race. We’re expecting him to run in a close 2nd until 300m to go and easily pull away from the rest of the field to win in around 3:32. (We hope thats not the case).

Other than the races mentioned, the other events seem to be lacking some of the best athletes in the World. Because of this each race seems open consequently meaning we could see some close races, with some race winners, who don’t usually get a chance on the diamond league circuit.
