Trackstaa takes a look at the names lining up for the GB team for the European Indoor Athletics Championships 2021 in Torun, Poland on 4th – 7th March 2021.

British Athletics has settled on its team for this week’s upcoming European Indoor Championships. The entire team includes 41 athletes in total and GB will be pinning its hopes on athletes like Keely Hodgkinson and Tiffany Porter.

With Elliot Giles, now the second fastest person ever over 800m indoors, and Marc Scott the fourth fastest on the UK all-time list over 3000m (you can read our interview with him here), withdrawing from the race, it will be the likes of Andrew Pozzi, the 2018 World Indoor 60m hurdles champion and 2019 European indoor silver medallist in the pole vault Holly Bradshaw who will be amongst GB’s strongest hopes for a medal.

That said, the British side still possess some household names with the likes of Andy Butchart, who will be up against Norwegian sensation Jakob Ingebrigsten, and Jamie Webb, fresh off running a 1:44.54 to beat Seb Coe’s previous indoor 800m record (1:44.91) which has stood since 1983.

When the team was announced, Olympic Head Coach Christian Malcolm said “I’m pleased to be selecting such a strong Great Britain and Northern Ireland team for the European Indoor Championships next month. It has been a challenging time for all the athletes and coaches recently, but we have seen some incredible performances.” He added, “Of course, we are looking to maximise the number of opportunities to win medals, but it also about providing opportunities for developing athletes as well as established athletes to achieve a GB vest. We have a real mix in the squad with several young athletes demonstrating their potential in really challenging circumstances. I am really looking forward to seeing how the teams performs in Torun.”
